ANNUAL LUCIA FESTIVAL AT UBC

When: Friday, December 2, 2011

Where: Buchanan D, MASS (Meekson Arts Student Space)

Time: 5:00pm until 6:00pm

Do you like music? Do you like cultural events? Do you like free things? Then look no further!

Welcome to the annual celebration of Lucia, hosted by UBC Scandinavian and Nordic Cultural Association (SNCA). But wait, what is Lucia?

Lucia is a traditional Nordic celebration of light and Saint Lucia, who the holiday is named after. While this holiday traditionally is held on the 13th of December we are celebrating it on the 2nd of December.

Essentially, Lucia is a musical performance. We will sing several Swedish Lucia-songs and serve coffee/tea, gingerbread and lussekatter (a type of sweet saffron bread).

Explore a tradition of another culture and enjoy this completely free performance! Bring your friends, your parents and your grandparents.

We are showing Aki Kaurismäki’s “The Man Without a Past” on Wednesday, Feb 11 at 5:30pm in Buch D222.

“The Man Without a Past” (Mies vailla menneisyyttä) from 2002:

The second part of Aki Kaurismäki’s “Finland” trilogy, the film follows a man who arrives in Helsinki and gets beaten up so severely he develops amnesia. Unable to remember his name or anything from his past life, he cannot get a job or an apartment, so he starts living on the outskirts of the city and slowly starts putting his life back on track. If you missed our Lucia at UBC on Nov. 28th or just want to see it again, please join us at Coquitlam IKEA at 1pm on Dec. 13, 2008. We will be performing the same Lucia pageant as we did at UBC plus additional Swedish and English Christmas carols.

What: SNCA Showing of “OUT OF AFRICA”

The most acclaimed motion picture of 1985 stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in one of the screen’s great epic romances. Directed by Oscar winner Sydney Pollack, Out of Africa is the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer), runs a coffee plantation in Kenya, circa 1914. To her astonishment, she soon discovers herself falling in love with the land, its people and a mysterious white hunter (Redford). The masterfully crafted, breathtakingly produced story of love and loss earned Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay (based on material from another medium), Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction (Set Decoration) and Sound.

Who: Anyone interested in learning German, Danish, Swedish, Polish, and Russian, or studying German, Scandinavian, Slavic, and Modern European Studies!

We are holding another movie night on Nov. 14th at 4pm. We are showing the Film “Out of Africa”, which is an American film based on Danish writer Karen Blixen’s novel of the same name. Location to be announced. We will also be heading over to Koerner’s Pub afterward for those who are interested.

Since the EUROFEST 2008 was cancelled for Friday, we thought that we should still get-together for some friday night drinking. It is also a great opportunity for you to meet the new members of the SNCA exec. Below is a message from our new social rep. about Friday.

Hej Everyone!
Let me introduce myself to you all, my name is Ewelina Postolska and I am the new Social rep on the Scandinavian Nordic Cultural Association exec. I’m supper excited to be a part of a great and charismatic exec team as well as to be a part of this awesome Scandinavian group on UBC.

We want to get things started with a “water” drinking event next friday February 8th. The SNCA club will be chillin at Koerners Pub with many pitchers of beer and just taking it easy after a long hard days of classes. So you are all invited to come out to Koerners and have a few with us.
